The original, 1984 Toyota MR2 was clearly inspired by the Fiat/Bertone X1/9 launched over 10 years earlier. Even its name, standing for Midships Runabout 2-seater, seemed to pay tribute the X1/9's origins as the Autobianchi Runabout Barchetta. The MR2, of course, was built around the 16-valve, twin-cam running gear of the then-current Toyota Corolla Coupé, in much the same way that the X1/9 had been based around the Fiat 128. |
